The most important thing you need to do before a tornado or another major storm is to determine where you and your family will stay. If you live in an area where storms are common, it makes sense that you would start to consider an above ground storm shelter for these kind of events.
Why Should You Get an Above Ground Shelter?
An above ground storm shelter offers your family a number of benefits. For one thing, it can accommodate even those with mobility issues. If someone in your family is in a wheelchair or finds it difficult to go up and down stairs, an above ground shelter offers a greater ease of access. That can be very important when you don’t have much time to reach your shelter. In fact, this type of shelter is a good idea even if no one has mobility issues at this time; as time passes, anyone could develop problems moving around and appreciate being able to get into the shelter without having to navigate a lot of stairs.
Another reason to seek out a tornado shelter that is above ground is that they are typically not as expensive as other models. If you cannot spare a great deal of money but still require protection, a well-made above ground storm shelter can help you. Many are made to withstand an EF-5 tornado, so you don’t need to worry that you and your family are unprotected.
If you are renting an apartment but live in an area where tornadoes and other wild weather events are known to take place, an above ground storm shelter is the perfect solution for you. These shelters are typically held into place with thick anchored posts that are set in concrete. However, when you are about to move to a new location, the posts can be cut so you can have your shelter moved to your new apartment.
What Do You Need to Install an Above Ground Storm Shelter?
Typically, you will need to put your storm shelter, sometimes called a safe room, on a concrete pad so that the anchor posts can be installed. If you do not have a concrete pad on your property, you may need a building permit to create a pad before the shelter is installed. It may be possible for you to have your shelter put in your garage, if you have one.
What are Some Features of These Shelters?
We offer shelters that include the following features:
- Steel construction
- Rust-resistant coating
- Steel-plated doors that are a quarter of an inch thick and has heavy duty lock pins
- Exterior lock
